From the CEO's Desk
I’m not sure how February disappeared so quickly, but it was one of those months when a lot quietly happened.
We launched the Outdoor Industry Awards for NSW & ACT (very excited about this), progressed some significant advocacy work — and some important progress in the AAAS Review and workforce recognition — and made sure your voice is being heard where it matters.
We also got back on the ground with Member Meet & Greets in Canberra and Parramatta. There’s nothing quite like being in the room together — hearing what’s working, what’s challenging, and how we can better support one another.
Behind the scenes, the Board reset priorities at our Strategy Day, and we continued pushing on workforce issues, EOIs, professional development and sector resources.
It’s been a solid month of progress.
Here is a snapshot of what moved in February — and where you can take action. Have a great March everyone!

2026 OCCUPATION SHORTAGE LIST SURVEY
Completing the Occupation Shortage List survey is critical for the future of our workforce. Outdoor Adventure Guides are currently recognised on the list — and that recognition directly supports settings like traineeship subsidies of $5,000 per student, making it more affordable for organisations to recruit and train new staff.
If we want to maintain that recognition and continue strengthening our workforce pipeline, we must provide current, accurate data that demonstrates ongoing shortages. Without industry input, the evidence simply isn’t there. If you have roles that remain unfilled or are struggling to recruit, please take the time to complete the survey — it’s one of the most practical ways you can help protect support for our sector and keep us on the list.

AAAS KEY CHANGES DISCUSSION
The AAAS Review is proposing several important refinements that will influence how capability and risk are understood across our sector for years to come. These include clearer articulation of Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) — shifting the focus toward demonstrated capability rather than a single prescribed pathway — a tighter and more consistent definition of “dependency” to better guide supervision and leader responsibility, and the inclusion of Benefit-Risk Assessment principles to more accurately reflect how we balance positive developmental outcomes with managed risk in outdoor settings. These are not minor wording edits — they shape training expectations, insurance interpretation, operational practice and how professionalism is defined. We genuinely need the industry’s voice on these changes to ensure the framework reflects real-world delivery and protects both participants and providers.
Tell us what you think here - Survey closes 16 March.
RESOURCES FOR NATURE-BASED OPERATORS
The Destination NSW Nature-Based Tourism support under the NSW First Program highlights the strength of nature and outdoor experiences across this state and offers insights, tools and guidance for visitor economy businesses to create, develop and promote high-quality nature-based offerings. NSW’s natural landscape — from national parks to forests, coastlines and wildlife attractions — is a major drawcard, and nature-based tourism is a key driver of visitation and regional prosperity.
The resources provide practical tips and considerations on building memorable, immersive experiences that connect visitors with the environment, along with best-practice examples and marketing guidance tailored for tourism operators looking to grow their nature-focused products. https://www.destinationnsw.com.au/destination-nsw-business-support/nsw-first-program/nature-based-tourism
OCCUPATIONAL SHORTAGE LIST
This list comes out every year and whilst we have been recognised on the current list, the survey is once again open for the governemtn to understand if the situation has changed. So, IF you have a shortage of access to qualified and available staff, then you need to complete the 2026 Survey.
You have on-the-ground knowledge and experience of recruitment activity in your business and your participation in this survey will improve the evidence the government uses to identify occupations in shortage.
Register now to get your unique link.
The survey closes on Wednesday 18 March 2026 at 5pm (AEDT).
Outdoor Council of Australia News
AAAS Framework Approved
FOR FUTURE ADDITIONS
The Board of the Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) approved an important new framework in January that will guide how the Australian Adventure Activity Standards (AAAS) evolves into the future.
The newly endorsed New Activity Decision-Making Framework provides clarity by guiding a strategic, not reactive, process. It asks the right questions up front and then proposals are assessed.
This approach protects the integrity of the AAAS while still allowing it to evolve in line with legitimate changes in practice and risk across outdoor recreation, education, adventure tourism and outdoor health.
The 4 Step Process
IN ADDING TO THE AAAS
1.Eligibility – confirming the activity fits within the AAAS sectoral scope and principles.
2.Assessment – testing whether the activity genuinely warrants a new Activity-Specific GPG.
3.Alternative placement – identifying more proportionate options where full GPG's are not justified.
4.Governance – establishing a clear submission, consultation, expert review and decision pathway.
