From the CEO's Desk
As we step deep into 2026, this month’s newsletter brings together a mix of advocacy, opportunity and connection that reflects what the outdoor industry is navigating right now.
Inside, we share important updates on the Federal Government’s insurance inquiry and how you can contribute to the conversation. You’ll also find calls to action around workforce shortages, including the annual Jobs & Skills Occupation List survey, alongside new data collection opportunities such as the Trail Bike Rider Survey, which will directly inform advocacy priorities through to 2028.
We’re also looking ahead to a busy year of events and professional development, with early details on the National Outdoor Education Conference in Cairns, upcoming Connect & Share and Happy Hour sessions, and key dates for the Outdoor Industry MasterClass, Awards and Outdoor Learning Mini Conference.
Updates from NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service are included, highlighting consultation opportunities and planning activity that may affect operators across a range of regions, as well as reminders about the resources, recordings and member benefits available through the portal.
We also have two wonderful opportunities to connect in person early in the year:
👉 ACT members & stakeholders are invited to join me for a networking and catch-up in Canberra on 4 February from 5:30 pm — a great chance to meet other local operators and share ideas.
👉 Then, the Board will be in Parramatta on 12 February from 5:30 pm at Parkroyal Parramatta — and we’d love for all members to drop by to say hello and have a chat about your priorities for 2026.
Email us if you would like to come along, to ensure we count you in.
I encourage you to take a few minutes to explore the full newsletter and follow the links that are most relevant to you and your organisation. There’s a lot happening as we start the year, and your engagement helps ensure the outdoor industry continues to have a strong, informed and collaborative voice.
Have a great February!

NPWS has provided an update on works at the Green Cape Lightstation precinct, confirming that Stage 1 refurbishment of the Green Cape Cottages—including internal upgrades and roof replacement— and remains on track for completion by mid-2026, subject to weather and construction conditions. Additional structural issues identified in the Head and Assistant Lightkeeper’s buildings are being addressed following specialist engineering assessments to ensure safety, protect the site’s heritage values and support the long-term success of the project. Planning is also advancing for Stage 2 services upgrades and landslip remediation, with archaeological investigations completed and heritage approvals underway. To enable these works, the cottages will remain closed for bookings in 2026, while the car park, lookout and surrounding walking tracks will stay open. In parallel, planning for the Lighthouse Reinstatement Project is well advanced, with works commenced and temporary closure of the Lighthouse before it reopens for Discovery Tours. Outdoor Council of Australia News
AAAS Framework Approved
FOR FUTURE ADDITIONS
The Board of the Outdoor CouncilofAustralia (OCA) approved an important new framework that will guide how the Australian Adventure Activity Standards (AAAS) evolves into the future.
The newly endorsed New Activity Decision-Making Framework provides clarity by guiding a strategic, not reactive, process. It asks the right questions up front and then proposals are assessed.
This approach protects the integrity of the AAAS while still allowing it to evolve in line with legitimate changes in practice and risk across outdoor recreation, education, adventure tourism and outdoor health.
The 4 Step Process
IN ADDING TO THE AAAS
1.Eligibility – confirming the activity fits within the AAAS sectoral scope and principles.
2.Assessment – testing whether the activity genuinely warrants a new Activity-Specific GPG.
3.Alternative placement – identifying more proportionate options where full GPG's are not justified.
4.Governance – establishing a clear submission, consultation, expert review and decision pathway.
