30 November 2022

From the CEO's Desk

Well, what a busy month it has been... I'm not sure about the rest of the industry, but opportunities are popping up at every corner and the future is getting brighter and brighter. Taking up these opportunities as they come to us is exactly what we are doing as they fill a need, amplify voice or build better foundations for the future. I remember very early on in my career a boss of mine said "why put off what you can do now?" and this has put me in a good place for the majority of my career. I hope you enjoy reading about some of these activities that we have been up to in this month's newsletter.

Also very relevant to my theme of this month's newsletter....CLIMATE ACTION!

Some of you may be aware that we carry the name Australian Outdoor Industry when we advocate for national change of policy, support and leadership. Our board of directors have endorsed its use to fill the gaps in the industry and help drive change for the better. We have now connected our national brand with Outdoors People for Climate and using the discussions in our Climate Change Sub-Committee we are asking for the industry to join us in this movement towards better action.

  • Step 1) We ask the industry to 'sign-up' and work with us IF YOU BELIEVE climate action is important - you can do so here
  • Step 2) We will help you by supplying information, tools and resources to use with your local area and political connections
  • Step 3) Be proud you are helping support something that is incredibly important for future generations wishing to continue providing communities with the benefits of outdoor education, recreation and therapy!

Signing up costs you nothing, but it gives a more powerful voice for our collaboration with Outdoors People for Climate. So, I hope to see our voice grow in this space!

Outdoor Careers, Symposiums and more...

This month, Outdoors NSW & ACT supported Bushwalking NSW and their Symposium on developments in National Parks, and discussed VET Quals with key RTO's for 2023 delivery. We also attended the NSW Tourism Awards and supported our partner Take 3 for the Sea in their recognition of our adventure tourism operators taking waste initiatives to another level. Congratulations to Valley Outdoors and Glenworth Valley Adventures on your achievements. Well-deserved!

And just before our MasterClass, we were privileged to join The Outdoor Education Group, Southbound Adventures and Office of Sport in promoting careers in the Outdoors at THE Schools Day in Ulladulla with thanks to Destination Sydney Surrounds South.

And we ended the month on an incredible high as we attended the ACHPER NSW Conference where the new Department of Education curriculum was discussed with schools looking to run the course. So excited to see new schools adding it to their offering.

The Forest School Leader training is tailored to support the Australian National Curriculum and Early Years Learning Framework. All practical session ideas, planning and recording documentation and presentations will relate to these learning outcomes. Health and Safety and Risk Benefit analysis input will also be tailored to the environment here in Australia. The Forest School learning approach can be adapted to benefit any child in any environment. It is all about reconnecting our children with meaningful experiences in their local nature.
